We have operated as a non-profit since inception. Our instructors are all volunteers with many years experience. Our lower program fees cover only our overhead to rent the space we train in. All other expenditures are covered by monetary donations, donated time and materials, or trade. It means that some of our goals, like becoming a legal non-profit entity or purchasing training materials, are taking a little more time.
The trade-off is not so bad when your training mat is filled with little feet learning Judo.
To that end we have always worked with an operational goal of becoming a 501(c)(3) Non-profit entity and applying for grants and funding so that we can keep our program costs low for participants.
We know that one of the biggest barriers to starting training is the financial commitment some arts/sports require. This is especially true in multiple child families, single parent households, and economically stressed families. We don't want cost to be a barrier to this very beneficial art and way of life.
